What is the difference between IP and MAC Address?

 In today's post, we will know what is MAC Address and what is the difference between IP and MAC Address?  The full name of the MAC is Media Access Control.  This is a unique address of Network Interfaces.  It is used as the network address for most of the IEEE 802 Network Technologies.

 What is MAC Address?

 The Media Access Control (MAC) Address is a binary number that is used to uniquely identify computer network adapters.  The MAC address is embedded in it during the manufacturing process of the network device.  The MAC Address details in the Network Device are stored in the firmware and cannot be edited again.


 The MAC address is usually assigned by the manufacturer of a Network Interface Controller (NIC), and is stored in hardware.  NIC is a computer circuit card that allows computers to connect to the network.  The Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) for Internet Protocol (IPv4) or the Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) for IPv6 translates IP into NIC during network communication.


 The MAC address is formed according to the rules of Three Numbering Name Spaces, managed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). The MAC format consists of 2 characters consisting of 6 sets separated by a hyphen.  An example of a MAC address is 30-65-EC-6F-C4-58.
 Some manufacturers, such as Dell's MAC Address, have their own unique identity, called Organizationally Specific Identifier (OUI), and identify the manufacturer.  OUIs of some famous companies are as follows:

  •  Dell: 00-14-22,
  •  Cisco: 00-40-96,
  •  Nortel: 00-04-DC

 Why is MAC Address Used?

 The network card each has a unique MAC Address.  Packets sent over Ethernet always come from MAC Address and are sent to MAC Address.  If one of the Network Adapter is receiving a packet, it is comparing the Destination MAC Address of the Packet to the Adapter's own MAC Address.  If the addresses match, the packet is processed otherwise it is discarded.

 Other use cases for MAC addresses

 Network switches store a list of MAC addresses seen at every port and only forward packets to the ports that need to see the packet.

 Wireless access points often use MAC addresses for access control.  They only allow access for known devices (MAC address is unique and identifies devices) with the correct passphrase.


 DHCP servers use the MAC address to identify devices and give some devices fixed IP addresses.

 MAC Address Performs Filtering on the Network To prevent strangers from accessing a network, the router is set to accept only specific MAC addresses.  In this way, the device is identified by the MAC address on the network.

 Filtering can be used to track network users and limit their access.  It may also have other uses, such as identifying a stolen device when it connects to a network.  For these reasons, many companies and institutions require the MAC addresses of their members' devices.  Therefore, it is important for device owners not to reveal the MAC address of their device to anyone except the Authorized Personnel.

 How to find MAC Address of your device?

 If you want to know the MAC address of your computer or laptop, then you go to the Command Prompt of the computer and type ipconfig / all and enter.  As soon as you enter your MAC address of your computer will appear on the screen.

 How to Change MAC Address?

 Generally MAC addresses cannot be edited, as they are defined by the manufacturer.  However it is possible to change MAC Address and use other technologies for MAC Address.


 For example, in the United States, National Security Agency apparently has a system that can track people's movement using MAC addresses.  This fact made Apple Inc.  Inspired to start using random MAC addresses in their iOS while scanning for the network.

 Both MAC Address and IP Address are used to uniquely define a device on the Internet.  The manufacturer of the NIC CARD provides the MAC Address, on the other hand the Internet Service Provider provides the IP Address.

 The main difference between MAC and IP Address is that MAC Address is used to ensure the Physical Address of the computer.  It uniquely identifies devices on a network.  Whereas the IP address is typically used to identify the connection to the network in which the device participates in the network.
